Friends of KLA is the unofficial alumni association of KLA Radio, UCLA's student-run radio station, which now broadcasts at www.uclaradio.com. ********************************************************************************* The following is an excerpt from a letter sent regarding Friends of KLA, by Lisa Welch-Nehring in 1995: WHAT WOULD YOU RATHER HAVE TODAY? STRAIGHT A'S, OR YOUR EXPERIENCE AT KLA?? Dear
KLA Alumni,
Next time you wish you were back in college, remember that you'd be
worrying about midterms this time of year.
If you lived the KLA lifestyle choice, your worry was likely greater.
You probably spent most of your time in a cramped little studio in
Ackerman Grand Ballroom, instead of studying in that building where they keep
books (across from Royce Hall, where they had great concerts).
The name eludes me.
That building, and the other one near the Sculpture Garden, are not what
I remember about college. I
remember the meaning of every color tape used by our music department, every
piece of stepped on gum on our government-issue carpet, and that Energizer
battery promotion we did when their spokesman was the Australian Hulk Hogan
character (circa 1988).
My point here is BOOKS SHMOOKS! What
did I learn in college? I learned
how to make friends in a school of 30,000 people, I learned how to work in
teams, I learned how to take on responsibility, and to enjoy it.
I even learned how to organize a damned banquet!
And who brought me all this joy? KLA!!
Two years ago (1993), we started an official UCLA alumni group called
Friends of KLA (aka FoKLA). Right now our purpose is to find former KLA staff members, to
keep the oral history of KLA alive, and to give advice to the wee-ones working
at KLA today. We also would like
for KLA alums to become members of FoKLA. As
members of FoKLA, we provide professional and moral support to current KLA
staffers, and also endeavor to keep in touch with one another.
Hugs
and Kisses, Lisa Welch-Nehring
